When you finally see a famous building in person for the first time, words escape you. You can’t believe that you are standing in front of one of the most celebrated and famous venues in the world. The Colosseum has that effect on you. It is large and imposing and staggering to think that it is almost two thousand years old. Wow!
Since Rome is an ancient city, many of the iconic buildings are nestled into open squares or piazzas. The Colosseum is located next to the Forum Romanum, which is filled with the ruins of temples, basilicas and triumphal arches. If you are a student of ancient architecture, then you must see both venues. You will be awed and inspired!
Next week, I will showcase St. Peter’s Basilica. Hope you enjoyed viewing the Colosseum!
