Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, was built more than 235 years ago to be a parish church to meet the spiritual needs of its parishioners and the community. It still continues that tradition today along with preserving its incredible history. Some of its most famous parishioners include George Washington and Robert E. Lee, who attended Christ Church throughout his life starting at the tender age of three.
The wineglass pulpit, which was installed during the 1890’s restoration is consistent with the design, location, and liturgical practices of the period when the church was built.
George Washington bought and later rented a box family pew and attended services when in Alexandria.
The earliest burials in the graveyard represented much of the gentry of Alexandria.
There are many Confederate veterans buried in the graveyard and churchyard.
In its earlier years, livestock may have been allowed to graze, which allowed the dual function of trimming and fertilizing.
