Arlington Garden is Pasadena’s only dedicated public garden. It is an example of urban open space complete with plazas, paseos, and gardens. Styled with an Italian style olive allee, numerous succulent and cactus gardens, an Arroyo Seco like pathway flanked by sycamores leading to a vernal pool, an orange grove laid out in grids like historical California orange groves, and paths and benches set throughout plant communities, this garden is not to be missed. Thousands of cars pass this garden every day and it is a gem tucked amongst an urban landscape. Arlington Garden is a valuable horticultural garden that is home to a great variety of rare and endangered California Natives, birds and animals. Let’s take a stroll.
This garden grew out of a Caltrans lot that was vacant for over 40 years. It was home to two mature oaks, a jacaranda, a California Pepper, and five different variety of palms. After much discussion, the City of Pasadena and Caltrans with the help of the community decided to create a Mediterranean climate garden. Since its creation in 2005, Arlington Garden has been open at no charge for people to learn of waterwise planting and to experience quiet enjoyment. It is all of that and much more. Come back next week for another installment and until then, enjoy nature!
One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides. ~W.E. Johns, The Passing Show

Let’s plan on it and we can dine al fresco in the garden.
